I'm using the definition of fetal viability set out by the American College of Emergency Physcicians (ACEP) which came up with a fairly accurate terminology. Their criteria for when a fetus becomes a baby is straightforward: fetuses become babies when they can survive their environment without the aid of an umbilical cord. Neonates, although they are often maintained via mechanical means until they come to full term, are considered babies to fit this criteria. |
