The minimum wage is less than half what it should be.I'm inclined to agree. Here living on less than about £8,000 pa is virtually impossible, so using general exchange rates, that's about $14,000 pa, or about $7.15 ph. Seeing as things tend to cost less in the USA than they do in the UK, it might just be possible to survive on $5.15 ph, but I wouldn't exactly describe it as an ethical amount to pay anyone. However, the real problem is that wages in other countries can give lower dollar values than $5.15 ph. Either the USA should tear up GATT and impose tarriffs against such countries, or it should devalue the dollar until the point that it becomes best value for companies to invest in American workers. |
