First, Southwest dispensed with hub and spoke system. Second, they fly only 737s, siimplifying maintenance and reducing purchase costs, and need fewer flight attendants per plane. Third, they hedge fuel like crazy and their hedges have Southwest buying fuel at the lowest cost of any airline. Fourth, they are non-union if I recall correctly. Fifth, they serve no food or very little.So the shorter routes, per se, were not the key to success; they are one piece of the overall strategy. |
