True and true.The fuel consumption problem is a differential equation. Deciding on what altitude to fly, and what speed to maximize the usage of a finite amount of fuel seems to me to be a (more continuous) version of the travelling salesman problem, or the knapsack problem: ie easy to find a good solution but computing an (the?) optimal solution can take an indefinite amount of time. I realize that this is not a discrete mathematics problem, but the solution pathways may be similar. |
