But for wood and electrical stuff, I'd rather go to a local lumber yard or plumbing/electrical supply and pay a little extra for something that actually lasts.

Absolutely. Although, as mentioned, Lowes IS better than HD. While it's best to go to a lumber yard to buy a few 2X4's, you onlky have to go through about 10 or 15 to get 2 or 3 good non-warped ones at Lowes. To get 2 or 3 good non warped ones at Home Depot, you have to go through the entire pile.
Back to the "inferior product"....HD gets the seconds, and even thirds, while the real lumber yards get the firsts. Do you think that a builder would go through going through 20 2X4's to get 1 or 2 good ones when doing a project....and this is NOT an exagerration, anyone that has bought lumber at HD (or even Lowes to a much lesser extent) will know what I mean.

The big boxes have pretty much run their course up here - only people who use them these days are newbies who've moved here from Long Island and downstate suburbs who have yet to learn the lesson of what not to do with "This old house needs work."

It's changing here too. As I mentioned, there's a lot of smaller stores opening up in recent years in competition to HD, etc....they have found a niche.
