Race relations are different in countries without a history of race-based slavery. Most of the prejudice is just nimbyism on steroids: it's people from not round here moving in and upsetting the locals. It's a bonus that they look funny. There is therefore a strong correlation between land values and racism in Britain and France.With the Pakistanis in Britain and the North Africans in France, the issue is mainly a religious one. If they abandoned their zany mediaeval misogynistic religion (or maintained it in name only whilst sitting around drinking raki, smoking hookahs, and watching belly dancing like decadent Ottomans), they'd be just as accepted as people from anywhere else. |
