One of the central tenets of Shinto is Japan exceptionalism. The Emperor was God on Earth. It's one of the reasons why Shinto never caught on outside Japan. It's a completely nationalistic belief system.Separating Shinto from the Japanese State is impossible by definition. It's like separating Christianity from Christ or Islam from Muhammad. |
