Truman would not be considered a left winger today but a moderate, yet he was ahead of his time in a lot of areas. In the top ten? That would make him a near great. I happen to think he was a great President. As a history teacher (retired eight years now) I always tried to help my students list the best presidents we've had and they always seemed interested in that particular topic. Here are mine.1. Abraham Lincoln-------Simply in a class by himself; no argument. 2. Franklin D, Roosevelt-Battled depression, Won WWII, great reformer 3. George Washington----Upheld US laws, set in motion US progress. 4. Theodore Roosevelt---Great reformer and people's champion. 5. Harry Truman---------Made critical A-Bomb move; postwar prosperity 6. Thomas Jefferson-----Doubled US size, democracy expansion in US. 7 Ronald Reagan--------US pride restored, crushed the Soviet Union. 8. Woodrow Wilson-------Crusader for peace and reform but race bigot. 9. Dwight Eisenhower----Peace and prosperity, postwar boom. 10.Andrew Jackson-------Rise of common man, defended US but bigot. |
