As long as they weren't attending on government time...so what? There is a pretty clear line in Washington between political appointees (who expect to get canned when a new administration comes into town) and government employees (who are career civil servants and expect to hold their jobs regardless of their political affiliations). It is considered bad form (at a minimum) to attempt to push politics on the government employees. It's pretty good practice to turn things around... If this were a Republican administration, would you see an issue if the Republican HUD Secretary sent an e-mail to all employees encouraging them to attend the Glenn Beck rally? My guess is that you'd be concerned that these employees might be unfairly judged (or even fear that they'd be unfairly judged) in their performance of regular duties if they didn't attend the rally. |
