Dixiecrats maybe, but still Democrats. They were certainly not Republicans, and, BTW, more Republicans voted for the Civil Rights Act in 1964 than the Democrats did. All the opposition was pretty much centered in the then Democratic South, though I now have to embarrassingly admit that Arizonan Barry Goldwater voted against it as well and that hurt the Republican Party badly. It was a stupid ignorant vote and one that we GOPers are paying for today even though the Dems take the blacks for granted and really haven't a damn thing to help them economically. Their neighborhoods are still short of shopping centers, their kids go to rotten schools, and a few shyster leaders of the black community know that if they finally wake up they will know they've been taken for a ride. If my party wasn't so damn stupid in that regard we'd be in those neightborhoods recruiting until we were panting for breath. |
