Selkirk, you ought to be aware that Dr, King was a registered Republican. This seems to have escaped most of you liberal Democrats. He never changed his registration and even though he became disillusioned with his party and their seemingly retreat from civil rights he n ever lost hope that the party of Lincoln would return to their roots and the party of freedom. Well we are the party of freedom, we are the party of emancipation, the Civil Rights Act of 1866 that gave black people citizenship, the 14th Amendement that codified that citizenship into the Constitution, the 15th Amendment that codified their right to vote, the Civil Rights Act of 1875 and many other laws that your party opposed.

Now let's take a look at the Democrats. They were the party of slavery, the party of the Ku Klux Klan, the party of segregated facilities and schools in the South, the party that legalized lynching, and may I point out that these things did not end until the South became a two party region in the late 60's and 70's. As for the tragic death of Dr. King, it is a fact that he was coming very close to endorsing New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller for President in 1968 before he was assassinated. His wife Cora came out and endorsed Rockefeller soon after Dr. King's death.

As far as the first black president, let's be clear about that too. It is an absolute certainly that if General Colin Powell had not refused to run in 1996 the nomination would have been his and as the polls showed he would have beaten Bill Clinton handily in that election, and, yes, would have swept the entire South as well save for Clinton's Arkansas. So let's keep things in perspective.
