A new rage for OTchat! :) |

Posted by SelkirkTMO on Tue Aug 31 20:38:12 2010 Saw this elsewhere and you'd swear it had been posted on OTchat for all the rage this guy got over there. So figgered it'd be fun to see how it goes over here for the win. :)AMERICANS: Brit here. First off let me say I'm not after one of those Europe v USA arguments. I'm just asking a question which MAY be a little bit critical of some things American things, but is not meant to be offensive or bait. Is it just me or is there a lot of hate in US politics? To be honest I mostly see it with "conservatives" hating "liberals" but I'm sure it goes the other way too. Take Obama. I'm sure many people don't agree with his politics. But even so you can't believe he is terrible. He is left-wing, but very centrist still. He's not exactly Marx or Staline. It's not like he's turning your lives upside down. But I seem to see a lot of hate towards him, rather than just disagreement. I've also seem some US conservatives seriously rage against liberals, going so far as to say they wish them dead. This is often based on small things like, for example, wanting an end to the war in Afghanistan. Somehow a single criticism of what the US is doing becomes "you hate America, go and die". Recently I listened to a song on YouTube, which just happened to be anti-war, and again, there was a LOT of raging against anti-war people. Now perhaps these people ARE naive. Perhaps it's stupid to think world peace can be achieved. But how can you *hate* someone for wanting to avoid killing? Here (the UK) this kind of thing really doesn't seem to happen much. There will be political debates between people of course, but there is not raging or hatred. Party leaders spend more time talking about what is good about themselves instead of just attacking their opponents. It feels like there is more respect. And I think it is because it is recognized that both sides are trying to make things better. Surely it is the same in the US. Different parties ALL want to make things better, the only difference is their opinions on how to do it. So why all the hate? inb4 hate @ OP |
