I like(ed) the 319s/320s. The technology is advanced and the Airbus is highly automated/computerized and therefore, like the F16, the moniker "Electric Jet." At the same time, they are extremely responsive and a joy to fly. Other than the latter stages of climb, at cruise, and during managed descents, most pilots hand fly the aircraft.
Pilots need to qualify on different aircraft only when assigned to it. OTOH, 320 pilots are qualified on 319s and 757 pilots can and do fly 767s. In simple terms, these are considered the same "family" of aircraft. So no, I am not qualified on the 737. I suppose, in that respect, it is similar to your old job in the MTA. If and when I go back, I'll probably be back on the Airbus or the 757/767 but with the merging of fleets with Continental, who knows anymore?
