Of course, the ultimate in making rude gestures at the Sinocentric world view (whilst solving this issue) would be for Japan to relegate Kanji to the same status as Hentaigana -- essentially a historical curiosity. I've heard it said before that this would cause a number of common words to be written the same -- is this actually the case, or is it as silly as the non-confusion between "present" (a gift), "present" (not absent), and "present" (now)? |
