:-) Correct me if I'm wrong, but AIUI the problem is just that the meaning of the Kanji is incompatible with the Sinocentric world view. Of course, the ultimate in making rude gestures at the Sinocentric world view (whilst solving this issue) would be for Japan to relegate Kanji to the same status as Hentaigana -- essentially a historical curiosity. I've heard it said before that this would cause a number of common words to be written the same -- is this actually the case, or is it as silly as the non-confusion between "present" (a gift), "present" (not absent), and "present" (now)?
