I've ridden on the buses in both NYC and LA. I've also ridden the buses with a few other major transit agencies: MUNI and WMATA being the next two largest. For the sake of a NY vs. LA argument, from my observations, the advantages that NY has are:

- generally more frequent buses
- noticeably cleaner buses (much less trash and tagging and the buses are more "presentable")
- more "upscale" clientèle

The advantages LA has are:

- clear differentiation between RAPID and Local buses
- a relatively useful "automatic stop annunciator" system (NYC doesn't have one)
- easy to read maps and easy to use signage

Both systems, IMHO, are REALLY good compared to others throughout the country.
