Or, he would have provided a poll number that shows Brown breaking 50 percent; the most recent polls have Coakley up by 9.

The most recent poll on RealClearPolitics (PPP, January 7-9) has Brown up by 1 with a margin of error of 3.6. Rasmussen and the Boston Globe had Coakley leading by 9 and 17, respectively, the week prior, but popular belief is that Brown "won" last night's debate. The only poll that matters comes next week.
