The use of the word liberal in the English language long predates Libertine

And back in the 1600s, "liberal" did not mean what it does now. A lot of modern-day libertine "liberals" are fond of quoting the King James translation of Isaiah 32:8: "But the liberal deviseth liberal things, and by liberal things shall he stand" . . . (translated from Hebrew "nadib", which means "magnanimous", hence "liberal" meant that back then and not libertine as it does today in sociopolitical context)
