Rhode Island smokes the most yet is the smallest state? Hmm, it probably smells like a huge ashtray over there. And I thought that was just the fire and brimstone pouring out of the governor's mouth at an anti-gay marriage rally. Actually, I think the list is top and bottom ten most improved since 1990 (and is based on per capita prevalence of smoking). Rhode Island ranked 48th (with 1 being the best) in 1990, when 34% of the population over age 18 smoked; in 2009, Rhode Island ranks 16th with 17.3% of the population smoking. The most smokers per capita are in West Virginia. |
