The real soul-searching for the Democrats is that had Mayor Bloomberg not schmoozed and/or bought so many of them outright - President Obama included - then Mr. Thompson probably wins.So now Democrats have to look at their 'machinists', e.g., Rev Calvin Butts and Rev Floyd Flake who were literally bought by Mr. Bloomberg for a few million, their unions, e.g., the UFT which has so much to be thankful to Mayor Bloomberg for since an almost 50% (!) salary increase is being bought off just the same, at their leaders, e.g., the aforementioned President Obama, and Christine Quinn, who was bought by Mr. Bloomberg as part of their joint effort to overturn term limits, who endorsed Mr. Thompson by effectively saying that he has decent penmanship at the least minute, and Brooklyn cheerleader Marty Markowitz, who is also in the Mayor's pocket, etc. So the Democrats can blame this loss on themselves, even if it gets much less press that the GOP's Harry Caray upstate. |
