(Re: THE YANKEES ARE CHAMPIONS OF BASEBALL!), posted by Grand Concourse on Thu Nov 5 16:42:56 2009. $1,578,299,197.According to USA Today, that's how much the Yankees spent in salary from the beginning of 2001 to the end of 2009. Over one-and-a-half billion dollars. No, they didn't win the WS in any year between 2001 and 2009, but they sure spent big bucks in each of those years, didn't they? You simply can't make the argument that since the Yankees didn't win the WS from 2001 to 2008, its OK that they spent over a billion dollars trying. The ends don't justify the means. The Yankees just didn't get what they paid for during those years, but they should not have been allowed to spend that much in the first place. There is something fundamentally wrong with a league when one team is allowed to spend over a billion dollars on players, whether they win or not. There definitely should be a salary cap and salary floor. Nobody, not the Yankees, the Mets, the Red Sox or anyoneThen and only then will there be competitive balance, like in the NFL. |
