Both Marist and Siena colleges have excellent political science courses and well-trained students who conduct the polls. And they're fastidious about both their research before conducting, and their questioning during. They collect a list of people who actually voted the previous year, and ask questions as follows:

"1. Are you planning to vote?"
"2. Who are you planning to vote for?"
The end.

If you answer no to 1, thank you very much. You must name a candidate for number 2. If you don't know, then you're "undecided" IF you're planning to vote. Doesn't get any more basic than that.

They DON'T ask questions like "Would you STILL vote for X if you knew he had a child out of wedlock?" or "Would you STILL vote for X if you knew they had a socialist agenda?" or include people who haven't voted for years under the column for the candidate who is paying your bills. And although most pollsters won't push poll to that extreme a degree, leading questions don't get you an honest answer.

As for New Jersey, they'll still be recounting next week. :)
