It's a national phenomena. Newspapers are getting smaller and raising prices.

Papers are losing money all over the country, that is why NEwsday is doing this. They will die if they don't do it, as how they currently operate isn't working anymore....so this is an effort to "try" and stay afloat a bit longer. Their circulation will go down, but so will there costs, so it will buy them some time.

NYC has strong papers, so you may not have seen how bad it's getting.

NYC has a little niche because people still read papers on their way to work on the subway. That HAS to increase the local circulation of the NYC papers more than areas where people drive to work. If I still used the subway, I would still buy a print paper too.
