Explaining to people from other countries that Chrysler and GM went bankrupt because of "retiree health care costs" brings stares of disbelief.

Yes because in Britain and in Canada, where most essential health care expenses are borne by the taxpayer, company-funded health care is not really essential. However some things that are not covered by the state system, such as dental care, prescription drug costs, and private wards in hospitals, are paid for by some employers. In Britain if you are not happy with the National Health Service you can pay an insurance company for private health care.
