The revisionism with respect to Von Stauffenberg's portrayal as a democratic rebel (when in fact he was more of an ultranationalist fascist who thought the best chance for German survival was to eliminate Hitler and negotiate for peace) is one of the reasons the German Bundesministerium der Verteidigung cited for barring the producers from official German army sites. Cruise's involvement with a religion recognized only as a cult in most European countries was certainly another problem. But the real issue was having 50 years of teaching by both the BDR and DDR that someone like Von Stauffenberg could be anti-Hitler and yet still not be someone to be emulated overwritten by one Hollywood writer was a real problem for the Germans.
