I've read a bit on 'The Reader', and even having not seen the movie yet, I don't think that it whitewashes the protagonist's crimes, since a premise of the movie is that she is put on trial for them and that she really did commit the conduct alleged.

But as to 'Valkyrie', it sure does sound like they have in mind the kind of Nazis that you could have over to your New Year's Eve bash, who just happen to be high-level party members too. I'm sure that those people had characters as complex as anyone else's, but that doesn't mean that you quietly bury horrific acts that they were in complicit in or themselves committed.
