Yep. That's exactly what we thought. We stayed in Carmel the first night. It's a very nice little town. The next day, a stop at Nepenthe (an old hippie hangout on the mountain with an AWESOME VIEW) in Big Sur for lunch, a tour of Hearst Castle and we stayed in San Luis Obispo the second night. That stop wasn't necessary as it was close enough to our third night's stopover, Santa Barbara, another cool place.

I remember we got lost south of SLO. The road isn't well marked and we ended up going through the town of Guadalupe. We passed through a lot of farmland (looked like grapes were being raised around that area). We got to see an area we never would have seen from Route 1. Eventually we found our way back to the PCH north of Santa Barbara, where it becomes US 101, IIRC.

We set aside 3 days to travel from San Francisco to San Diego along the PCH. Had we not planned to stop at Hearst Castle, we could have eliminated the stop in San Luis Obispo and just stayed in Carmel and Santa Barbara. But I don't regret it and hope to make the drive again one day, maybe going south to north this time.

Also, make sure you don't have to stop for gas at the one gas station in Big Sur. In 2004 they were already charging $3.17 a gallon for regular when most gas stations in CA. were charging $2.17. They said they get a delivery only once a week due to being in the middle of nowhere
