I should add ... WHENEVER someone wants "rights" to any photographer's work, even if it's a "hobby" ... photographers ARE entitled to at bare minimum "credit in writing" as "attribution" for their work. But many DON'T know that a "token sum of cash agreed to for publication WITHOUT the 'purchase of all rights' is ALSO 'part of the industry contract' with their 'talent.'"

If you WRITE a column which is published (did it for MANY years) and the magazine/paper/site PUBLISHES your work, typical scale is anywhere from $30 ["underground publications"] to as much as $150 for ten column inches in magazines/newspapers ... more money for more inches typically. I don't know the valuation of photographs, nor if this is a "one time use" but I advise ANY "journalist" or "photojournalist" to be AWARE of their COPY rights ... by PERMITTING one publisher FREE USE of the material, then you are granting them permission to provide it elsewhere and if you happen to have something RARE and valuable, you give up all rights to those works by saying, "OK" ...

Zapruder at least bargained for a BS fee with his movie camera in Dallas ... one has to be wary of the commercial media and thus my (probably rude) mentioning of what I did ... but IF you "open source" your works, DO be aware that you can never regain control of the images or writings you've released ... NYTimes at least has some MORALS, most other publishers do NOT.

I say this ONLY as a musician who recorded several albums with Vanguard Records and Columbia. I *never* got paid, and they own ALL of my (1970's) music recordings STILL (and got RENEWED on not having to pay me) but I *also* recorded Woodstock 1969 and never got paid for that three record album EITHER.

No denigration towards the TIMES here ... just wanted to explain WHY I opened my mouth in the first place. :)
