And yes, they should have.Pre-September 2001, what evidence did U of I have that Ayers was anything more than an ex-radical who was sorry for his actions? How was he any different from a guy who had been charged with some other violent crime but never convicted of anything? Consider, for example, Martin Tankleff, who has just had his conviction for double murder reversed due to prosecutorial misconduct. Suppose he gets himself a Ph.D. now? Should U of I not consider him for a position because he was charged with a violent crime? |
