A small decrease in mass, huh? Last I read in a book, the sun looses 4 million tons of mass a second…

Everything is relative. The sun converts about 4 million tonnes of matter into energy per second. However, this represents approximately 0.7% of the mass of the protons which are fused into helium nuclei.

And, yes, particle accelerators have taken two smaller particles and fused them into a bigger one. Unfortunately, the larger particle decays almost immediately. It’s studying the products of these decays that gives us insight into the structure of matter.

And, yes, there is something more to this. We don’t understand, fundamentally why matter has mass. That’s why we’re looking for the Higgs boson. The previous large particle accelerator at CERN, the LEP, produced hints of its existence. But it was turned off so that the ring space could be used to construct the Large Hadron Collider, which is due to be turned on, on September 10th.

However, returning to the subject at hand, all these experiments and particles happily obey the law of conservation of energy and the principles of thermodynamics. No exceptions.
