I actually enjoyed my several trips on the Blue Line in LA last year...I was bemused by the automated announcements in English and Spanish (why don't the NTT's do that here?). I thought the riders were much quieter and more civil than the characters I see every day on NYCT. It does occur to me that the perceived "danger" associated with a location, transit line, neighborhood, etc., is proportional to the demographics of its residents, ridership, etc., but is not always borne out by the statistics.

It's also highly subjective...perhaps my dark skin helped me blend in on the Blue Line and made me less noticeable, whereas I would be very uncomfortable if my car broke down on Cross Bay Blvd. in Howard Beach at night...so I am not immune to this kind of fear myself. But old impressions die hard, and I suspect this is where people's fears sometimes originate...
