I don't know what Verizon is planning to do there - all of their coding is QAM (the worst POSSIBLE codec) but I don't know how they plan to do that as their home run is LIGHT and it still has to be decoded with CPE (Customer Premises Equipment) ... what it gets decoded into though I'm not sure of. I doubt it will be anything like the QAM the cables are doing since Quadratute Amplitude Modulation is nothing more than modulating a carrier frequency. Theirs are likely to be quite different from cable.

And as to "buy/own" even if they sold the boxes, I wouldn't spend the money as they're already looking at revising their standards and any boxes would be obsolete anyway in a couple of years. I'd rent until then anyway. I've gotten 11 years out of my original Hughes DTV boxes, but it's time to move on now that the new birds are all lit and coming online. Yeah, you might get a year - maybe two out of what they're hooking up now, but I can't see spending for only two years worth of box only to have to buy them again. That's me anyway. :)
