But there weren't so many nuisance taxes, sales taxes, fees, tolls, fares, excises, levies, etc. that we do now. And their rates weren't as confiscatory as they are now.Because politicians had real budgets and set basic taxes, such as income tax and capital gains tax, at a rate which would cover them. Now, politicians are afraid to raise income tax, capital gains tax is a joke, so there are a billion user fees, each with its own collection bureaucracy. |
