The Korean (father and 2 sons) fish store on my corner employs 6 Mexicans (I have no idea of their status-- or of the Koreans either, for that matter.) I've watched the Mexicans work their way up in the business from truck unloaders, to ice bucket carriers, to fish filleters, to countermen. It took a while but the Koreans now trust the Mexicans to run the store on their own on Saturdays while the owner and sons take a day off.Everybody (Koreans and Mexicans) speak enough English to wait on customers but the owner and workers have developed a Korean/ Spanish slang that seems to work for them. To me, this is the perfect New York story. Everybody works hard, gets along, makes a few bucks. No questions asked. |
