But there weren't so many nuisance taxes, sales taxes, fees, tolls, fares, excises, levies, etc. that we do now. And their rates weren't as confiscatory as they are now. Income tax is only a small part of the tax bite Americans suffer. And while the top rate back then may have been 90%, something like only one in five people paid income taxes back then. Exemptions and deductions were so rich that the average Joe remained whole. And the government, and humanity, hummed along just swell. |
