Byrd was a KKK member from 1942-43 and a "sympathizer" up until about 1950. He's long since apologized and renounced his KKK affiliation.Helms, OTOH, switched to the Republican party in 1970 over "frustration with the Democratic Party's stance on civil rights". He continued his opposition to equal rights until he retired from office. your pal, Fred |
