Well, I have not spoken English my whole life. What I did learn, and early on, was to respect and honor the differences that languages rightfully call their own.Pedants might well zero in on the occasional circumflex or umlaut in written English (you're not the only one who reads the New Yorker-- HA!) but this is recognized by most as unnecessary priggishness which even the best educated feel no need to replicate in their own writing. Such showy displays of pedantry suggest a desire to impress rather than inform. Please don't tell me that you write out the names of Manhattan's numbered cross streets in full, another foolish priggish New Yorker habit-- along with referring to the west side trains as the "I.R.T." "Nothing undermines" you? Of course not, bro. Nothing undermines the pope either since he is gifted by the divine with infalliblity. Hmm. Maybe you are, too?? HA! |
