It's a nice idea, and we'll see how it goes, but I still think it will be lightly patronized. Current election related threads aside, I don't believe most of the off topic posts that come from off topic threads, that started as on topic threads, that strayed through the normal course of conversation can be "forced". It's sort of like a group of friends sitting at the bar saying, "We will now talk about "this" or "that". In situations like that (as with subchat), it just sort of happens.
I still don't think that conversation is something that can be forced. Similarly, I don't think it's that easy to just pick up and continue talking about the off topic thing, that started in an on topic thread once the thread over at subchat is locked, and a link brought here. The one thread that was locked and linked over to here died soon after.
But I hope I am wrong...we shall see.
