Zealous prosecutors often will press for murder charges when to any reasonable person what happened was manslaughter (death through reckless behavior that could be expected to possibly cause death). They think it helps their reputations and careers.Similarly, there have been cases of drunken drivers charged with murder. Given that manslaughter can be punished by 15+ years in jail, it's not clear that it makes any real difference, but it does tend to skew the justice system. It tends to devalue the crime of murder. |
