This was the first service of this type that I ever attended. Prior to this I always typecast funerals as a half-hour of Hebrew (or 45 minutes of English with a little Latin) followed by going to someone's house for Entenmann's.

The energy of the chorus, the clergy and the singers was remarkable. The various eulogies were a nice mix of sadness and humor- especially Dante's teacher recalling his nonconformity during gym class.

All of the participants went out of their way to make us feel welcome. Tragic as this occasion is, the huge turnout of Subchatters must have been a huge comfort to friends, family and each other.

The suitably bizarre pilgrimage of Broadway Junction afterwards was in keeping with the strength of the railfan community. As usual, there were plenty of puzzled looks from innocent bystanders on the bus, the J train, the platform and especially the bodega. Green Hawaiian Punch, anyone?
