The market just isn't there because the cost is too high. - Lyme disease vaccine - it worked but the liability risk to profit ratio was too high so it was withdrawn. - Asbestos was really useful stuff. The non-friable version probably isn't even dangerous. - DDT was a superb insecticide, but ... Many great pesticides and herbicides turned out to be far too dangerous. - Teflon, etc. will be phased out because of PFAS. - Some useful stuff is much harder to buy than it used to be. Dynamite, mercury, strong acids and bases. On a side note, I've done some really great one-day hikes that can no longer be done other than as a major excursion because the access roads have been wiped out. Another example of the provider (in this case, national parks) of the service (roads - not really high tech but having an engineering component for sure) not seeing enough additional revenue to justify continuing the service. |
