Surprisingly, the phones still worked.

All NY telephone Central Offices have back-up power generators!
The FUEL supply is the determining factor.

Some small CO's had/have diesel GM Bus engines, larger offices have 750 kw or 1500 kw turbine engines.

The fuel for both is No. 2 fuel, the same as home heating oil.
