Yes.

Originally (over 60 years ago) they were just mainstream Democratic and anti-machine. Koch first ran for Assembly, and lost, against DeSapio's guy*, in 1962. They became much more left wing over time, but have clearly become more moderate in recent decades.

* Though I believe Bill Passannante, his opponent then, was never accused of corruption.
