I should note, even though many if not most pilots still refer to the approach as the Expressway Visual 31, it has recently been replaced by the Park Visual 31 with the nomenclature meaning Corona. The approach paths are fairly similar to the point of being almost identical. The reason for the change was to provide more precise guidance; that is, since the Park Visual 31 also refers to the RNAV (GPS) X 31 approach, you follow published waypoint fixes, typically along the lateral (LNAV) and vertical (VNAV) paths, at least in my company. This effectively allows for the non-precision approach to be flown as a precision approach, at least that's what those pilots tell me.Anyway, many of the waypoint fixes are identified by the relationship to the 1986 World Series Champion New York Mets. By the way, with rare exceptions, waypoints fixes are identified by five letters. Look closely at the charted approach and you'll find the following: SHAYY = Shea Stadium GACAR = Gary Carter DRRYL = Darryl Strawberry KEYTH = Keith Hernandez DCTRK = Doc Gooden (Dr. K) GGREG = Maybe Gregg Jefferies? |
