Actually, the first TASER (acronym for Thomas A. Swift Electric Rifle) was developed in 1974; since it used gunpowder as a propellant for its electrode darts, the ATF classified it as a "firearm" two years later.

The modern "Taser" dates to 1993, nine years after Bumpurs.
