I think that there is a social contagion whereby way more people identify as trans than legitimately are, and get HRT when they shouldn’t.

That is sort of as implausible as believing that lots of people talk themselves into being gay.

"I'm unhappy, and I think the cure for being unhappy is to identify in such a way as to bring onto myself huge amounts of inconvenience, expense, and hostility (not to mention additional medical problems)."
