Not that the existing system is necessarily good at keeping guns out of the hands of the mentally ill. As a comment pointed out:Form 4473, which a prospective firearm buyer has to fill out before his purchase is approved, has only one question regarding mental health: "Have you ever been adjudicated as a mental defective OR have you ever been committed to a mental institution?" A lot of crazy people you see wandering big city streets could honestly answer no to both those questions. That they committed a mass shooting may be the first indication that they're totally nuts. It’s probably not quite this bad in practice, as many of the hardcore lunatics are likely to have criminal records that will disqualify them from gun ownership. |
