Curtis Sliwa is a well intentioned gentleman who likely does not have the depth of skill needed to run an organization the size of NY City

Which of the candidates, never mind the incumbent, has any such skill? And what skills are required?

What I find really amazing is that the two largest parties in the united states are unable to locate an acceptable candidate between them

I don't find it amazing.
