The detectives involved have done several interviews and said in no way did they treat a crime scene like that.

I believe them. I think he really did die clenching the cigar with his mouth.

Or maybe one of the survivors at the restaurant put the cigar back in his mouth(before police arrived) in his honor as "the cigar" was his nickname?

But I don't think the NYPD detectives would tamper with a crime scene like that.

It's also believed that the attack on Galante happened at that time of day because the hit team knew that the NYPD changes shifts between AM and PM at around that time and figured the police would be at roll call instead of patrolling. This makes sense because a similar strategy may have been used by the same hit men at Licata's on Forest Ave in Ridgewood, Queens in 1982.

btw- we were shopping on Knickerbocker Ave when the Galante hit happened but nowhere near it. We were on Stanhope and Knickerbocker, probably eight blocks away. My pediatrician was a Filipina lady named Dr. Zapata and her office was at that corner. I remember all the emergency vehicles racing towards the shooting.

To this day, the store where the shooting happened is still vacant. No one really knows why even though Knickerbocker and the Bushwick/East Williamsburg sections are gentrified hipster zones. One would think the retails space would have been rented by now.
