Peace in our time.That works both ways. The events since 10/7 show that a pax Israeli (Israel occupying the "river-to-the-sea") cannot be maintained indefinitely. It's much more costly to occupy a hostile territory than to conquer it. The US discovered this in Iraq and Afghanistan. Israel has found this out twice: in 1973 with Egypt and on 10/7. Israel and Egypt settled difference, when both realized that military occupation of Sinai was untenable in the long run. There are elements within both Israeli and Palestinian societies that realize this and want to reach an accommodation. They are thwarted by elements on both sides that will use violence to prevent any agreement. There won't be any long lasting peace until those opposing an accommodation are discredited within their communities. |
