Did you think Eisenhower and Churchill were wrong with their "unconditional surrender"?

I assume you mean Roosevelt and Churchill's declaration at the Casablanca Conference on Jan. 1943.

The conference and statement were made after Allied victories at Stalingrad (a few weeks before the official end on 2 Feb 1943), El Alamein in November 1942, the simultaneous success of Operation Torch (North Africa landings), etc.

It was made, after the war had turned to the allies favor. The allies had reserves to throw into the war; the axis had none. The only way the axis could win would be, if the allied coalition broke apart and Germany could sign a separate agreement with either Germany or the UK/US. The "unconditional surrender" statement was a signal to Stalin that the UK/US were not interested in a separate peace with Germany. They were afraid that Stalin might sign a separate peace with Germany.

Even with these motives, and the safety of knowing that the tide had changed, Roosevelt further clarified his meaning of "unconditional surrender" in a radio broadcast in February 1943.

"we mean no harm to the common people of the Axis nations. But we do mean to impose punishment and retribution upon their guilty, barbaric leaders."

The distinction between the people and their leaders is something that Israeli leaders have not made. If it had, it would be supplying food to prevent starvation like it did during the 1967 war.
